Ciaran Gowran is a music producer and independent singer-songwriter from Ireland. His relationship with music began in childhood, with his father instilling a love of music in him from an early age. Music was a constant presence growing up, with his mother playing it throughout the day, every day. Being surrounded by music from such a young age played a significant role in shaping his connection to it and his eventual decision to pursue it creatively.
While his own releases are rooted in indie folk and alternative music, Gowran’s approach to production extends across a wide range of genres. He enjoys exploring different sounds, working with artists from different musical backgrounds, and treating each project as an opportunity to develop creatively and technically.
He believes music has an unparalleled ability to evoke emotion. A song can bring feelings to the surface that are difficult to express through ordinary conversation, allowing people to connect with experiences they might otherwise struggle to communicate. This belief is central to his own songwriting, which he approaches as a form of honest expression. Rather than beginning with a particular concept or trying to write what he thinks a song should be, he draws from personal experiences, conversations and events in his life, translating them into music as naturally as possible.
His approach to production is guided by the quote from Tyler, the Creator: “Create like a child, edit like a scientist.” During the creative process, he likes to experiment freely, often exploring multiple ideas simultaneously without immediately judging whether they will work. He sees production as an opportunity to play, take risks and discover things he might not have planned. Once the initial ideas are there, he takes a more analytical approach, refining the arrangement, sounds and mix until the track comes closer to his original vision.
Over the past year, collaborating with other artists and exploring genres beyond his own releases have played a significant role in his development. These experiences have broadened his understanding of different creative approaches and strengthened his ability to adapt his production and engineering skills to different artists and projects.
Gowran recognises that one of the most challenging aspects of being a musician is the disconnect between the music an artist imagines and what they are ultimately able to create. Having a clear idea of how a song should sound does not always mean having the technical ability to bring that vision to life. For him, the creative process is about continually working to bridge that gap, developing the skills and understanding needed to bring what he hears in his head closer to what comes out of the speakers. This pursuit of improvement is a fundamental part of his approach to music, driving him to keep experimenting, learning and refining his craft.
Ultimately, he aims to continue developing as both a producer and an artist, particularly through working with other musicians in the studio. He finds it rewarding to help others realise their creative vision, whether through songwriting, production, recording, mixing or mastering. Seeing an artist become genuinely excited as their ideas begin to take shape is one of the most satisfying parts of the process. This combination of creative exploration, technical development and collaboration is what motivates him to keep making music.
